How Reading Aloud is Beneficial for Students

For the development of literacy or education, a good vocabulary and realistic imagination reading is considered as important factor. The value of reading is increasingly decreasing due to large use of interactive electronic books that allows the independency in reading from a younger and younger age.

There are various studies conducted that defines the importance of loud reading for the students. It is known as the traditional way. There are multiple benefits of reading loud in classroom studies or during self-studies, some of them are mentioned below:

1. Strengthening fluency – The successful reading could be defined through the fluency. It is completely dependent on the  automatic word and data analysis  depending on the individual’s capability. Lot of practice is required, if a child has grasped the automatic and fluent reading together. Every person needs time and means to automatically recognize each of the word with full accuracy they are reading, if they are preparing to read it aloud. Essentially the levels of fluency increases when the students practice the repetitive oral readings.

2. Escalate the understanding – The usage of several techniques for oral reading increase the understanding of reading among the students. Fluency is directly connected to understanding, when the students become smooth and accurate readers by acknowledging someone.

The regular practicing of a text allows the students to become more regular and comfortable with a particular text they have to read aloud. With the familiarity of words, they can find and discover different meanings of the same text in front of others. The understanding of the particular texts of children can be increased if they will express their reading in a proper way and approach new reading each day.

3. Development of reading skills – For making the effective communication with deep meaning of the texts, students should take conscious decisions based on the method of their reading and their focus point that need to be emphasized while reading. For example, if a students I reading the book, “My Shadow” of Louis Stevenson, then in the initial lines of the book, the reader have to understanding the actual meaning of the content and the emotional meaning of the text. With this, a reader can narrate the text with the same emotions or can communicate in the voice described in the lines of the book.

The expressions and reading of the same text in different levels at a time engage the children in critical thinking based on their analysis and examination of the texts by drawing conclusions, making inferences and informed decisions based on the method of communicating conclusions. A student can become sensitive to the print readings and can gain various insights while they are reading something aloud.

Development of reading skills 4. Development of other reading skills – When a reader read something expressively, then they are more likely to develop the felling of competencies in memory, sequencing, attention, grammar, understanding cause and effect and many more.

He/she should invest their time in reading, increase their focus and attention to prepare a particular text for reading it aloud. It is also important for the reader to understand that they need to gain a proper understanding and working of various rhetorical and grammatical structures, methods of sequencing words and ideas when a child is preparing for their oral readings.

5. Helping the struggling readers – A reader can enhance and expand their base and strengthening, if they will learn to express their oral  reading and communication skills  and wanted to apply it on the text they will read now. Through regular and repeated rehearsals and practice, readers can improve their accuracy and the ability to recognize the words or texts easily.

Also, with the loud reading, one can monitor themselves effectively. He/she can easily discover whether their texts sound right or make some sense. They can record their readings and listens them again and again that allows them to monitor their improvements. With this, they can also increase their fluency and confidence.

6. Confidence building – As readers, they can build more confidence in their actions with expressive skills. Children will found that the fluency and the purpose can be gained with the proper guidance and practice and the repetitive success in reading also help the individual in raising their confidence levels.

7. Facilitating collaborative learning – Every reader can receive their feedback from the other members of the group, if they will do it by gathering small groups, or reading in response groups for their oral readings. Children can directly enter to the collaborative learning if they will exchange their ideas based on the reading practice and by giving critical feedback and responses to each other.

Facilitating collaborative learningTo become strong and expressive readers, every children need to assist each other. one can step in to the oral tradition of literature, if they will use expressive reading skills because large part of the students have been taken for creating the community that have interested listeners and readers, in such communities, sound of speech is celebrated and the words of a person for appreciation. This type of community plays an important role as it helps in sustaining itself as it is self-supporting.

In the variety of formats, all children are reading aloud to make use of various channels available to them including buddy-support, individual support, reading support groups or whole-group encouragement. Children can feel relax and make discoveries and risks, as soon as they will realize that their readings are performing in an expressive and supportive atmosphere.

8. Second language learners can gain English literacy – If the literacy skills in English are developed in second language learners by making them practice repetitively, and then there are more chances to learn new and meaningful words. Also, they can use their language in the most interactive way. Reading aloud is considered as the best opportunity for the second language learners through which they can practice their selections of readings many times.

In the classroom readings, practice can be done in the effective manner with reading response groups as the direct feedback can be generated form this methodology, as the groups are small and they can follow clear response procedure. Taking small risks have become necessity for the second language learner so that they can manage and master the new language in a better way. New words and their patterns can be learned through repetitive readings.

New texts can be approached by learning unfamiliar words in the same atmosphere. Also, they can work with their reading partners or with the teacher or the members of their reading response groups. Each of these offers different concept of learning new words. Also, through the dramatic and social interactions, the learners can quickly internalize various structures, meaning and words of second language.

9. Sharing newly crafted abilities with othersWhen the children realized that they have become expert of reading loud, their excitement level automatically increased and for varied situations. When they can do better oral readings, they always wanted to read aloud in the classroom and at other places as their confidence has already increased due to large scale learning of reading texts or content.
