Teaching is different from giving speech in a company meeting or giving orders to a subordinate. That is surely not teaching that will be counted under dictating or ordering. In teaching telling people what to do doesn’t include because it there choice whether they will learn or not or think about of it later. Teaching is very part in the education as this will decide the future of that person. The other key aspect of teaching may be that if you just start telling people what to do then the chances of their being creative and taking chances will be reduced and it will increase the dependency on the teacher at high.
Here are the advice taken from the teachers who have been teaching formally in classrooms in schools or colleges and some of them are teaching informally in their offices, during dinner etc. For the faculties who are new in this field follow these steps and it will be very helpful for their teaching career.
1. Knowledge about your subject – A research has been conducted which shows that there are six main elements that allows a person to perform good teaching. Among them, one of the most important factors is the knowledge of the subject. It is also found and analyzed that the best teacher in the institution and the college had deeper knowledge of the subject as it falls below the certain point and creates significant impact on the learning of the students. A special and targeted help is given to the teachers so that they can understand the particular areas where the knowledge could be effective but is shown week.
2. Appreciation is important – When a student is appreciated in a wrong way, it is very harmful for them. Various studies have been made by the education experts and observe that the appreciation and the praise should be encouraged but it is also important to convey the low expectations of the teachers. Due to lack of ability, it is observed and analyzed that if the students are getting failure and it is met with the sympathy rather than the anger, then there are more chances to think badly. There are various findings on this particular method which are open for the interpretation. However, there are chances when the teachers do their task or work in a proper or bad manner but some of the methods are not appropriate and suitable in all circumstances.
3. Instruction matters – On the achievement of the students, the quality of teaching matters a lot as it creates big impact especially for those that have poor backgrounds, effective questioning and assessment as they are at the heart of great teaching. It basically involves the children to practice different new skills with the introduction of progressive learning. The process of defining effective teaching is not easy but the researchers say that the progress of the students need to be assessed for defining the quality of the teacher.
4. Teacher beliefs count – Teachers do certain things in classroom because they hope that what they wanted to achieve has some effect on the progress of the students. Through various researches, a belief has been made on the nature of math and the actual meaning lies in understanding the ideas of the teachers based on the learning of children and the importance of their role in a particular process along with the effectiveness it generates. However, the supporting evidence is not conclusive. There are no convincing relationships between the progress of the beliefs and pupil.
5. Maintaining teacher-student relationships – The interaction with the teachers creates the big impact on learning and the climate of the classroom. It has become important to create the classroom environment which is in the more and constant demand by creating positivity and self-worth among the students. Rather than the ability, the success of the student should be attributed.
There are other factors that need to be considered including:
1. While teaching don’t think about your own level that how much expert or excellent you are rather than think about them and grab a teaching or learning method that will fill those empty vessels (brains) with their knowledge. Understanding that you are not the focus rather your students are. Be a guide for them with your experiences but try to make them guide themselves with your tips.
2. Study your student or understand them as you need to have the material before you are teaching. Every fresher faculty may be aware about these points like their students’ talents, prior experience and needs. It’s good if you know what to teach but it will be much better if you have the knowledge about the level of your student and teach them according to that pace.
3. The third factor to be kept in mind is building a safe environment for their student so that they will be able to take risk. Creating a safe place in their mind so they can be creative with themselves will result in the learning environment that is emotionally, intellectually and psychologically safe. They should know the fact that they can trust their instructor and will be comfortable in taking risk about what they know.
4. There’s one phrase and it is well said the desire is infectious, if you have the passion for their passion then it will develop their passion grow faster. If the teacher has it, then the students will most likely to catch it. If you have the passion and it has to be genuine that shouldn’t be something that you can fake because your student can get to know when you care or not.
5. Make it clear for them and break the complexity into the simplicity. The chief attribute of a great or good teacher is the ability to break down the complex ideas and make them understandable. What teaching is basically the essence of teaching and learning is communication.
